WHAT IS TRAUMA-SENSITIVE YOGA?

“The price of admission to a trauma-sensitive class is not self-love. All parts are welcomed in an embodied way.”

What is it?

Trauma-sensitive yoga is a body based clinical intervention for complex trauma. It is a great treatment option for what often gets termed ‘treatment resistant’ trauma disorders.

What does it involve?

No mandatory talk component - if talking about the event, or the impact of it is triggering, TSY could be for you. There is no mandatory talk component, and the only talking component that is invited is an open reflection/processing of the experience of the session itself.

Encourages choice and agency - trauma shuts down our ability to choose what happens to use. TSY invites you to make active choices about your body.

Present moment awareness - TSY invites present moment experience, reducing flashback/reexperiencing symptoms (with studies showing up to a 33% reduction over 10 weeks!)

Body based grounding - reduces dissociative symptoms. Where the body can be a scary (or impossible) place to be, TSY encourages titrated, low dosage interoception. It is an invitation to explore being in your body, or simply knowing you have a body, in a safe and choice led way.

"Yoga sessions with Emily have always made me feel incredibly safe. I have struggled in other yoga classes due to the demand on my body and anxiety, but Emily's classes allow me to access yoga in a way that suits my body's needs and in an environment that holds space for grounding myself when I need to. I have never experienced anything like it; I always come away feeling empowered and like I've learnt important things about what my mind and body is capable of."
